How To Reconnect a Camera to the network After router, equipment, or Wi-Fi settings change

If a you get a new router or you change your Wi-Fi credentials (i.e., network name or password), you will need to reconfigure the video device locally to connect to the new network.

Most cameras follow the below steps, with some notable exceptions:

There are multiple methods available to restore communication without the need to delete or factory reset an enrolled video video device (although this is an option).

To reconnect a video device to a Wi-Fi network using WPS mode:

This method applies to all WPS-enabled Alarm.com video devices.

Note : WPS is not available on all routers. Refer to the router’s installation manual for additional instructions.

  1. Locate the WPS button on the router. Typically, there is a button labeled WPS
  2. Locate the WPS button on the video device. On most video device models, the button is labeled WPS or Reset .
  3. Hold the WPS button for a few seconds (or until the LED begins to flash blue) to put the video device into WPS mode.
  4. Press the WPS button on the router for 1 to 6 seconds to put the router into WPS mode. The time can vary significantly between router models. Typically, a light flashes on the router to indicate it is in WPS mode. If there is no LED or a blinking red LED, WPS might be disabled on the router.
  5. Wait approximately 2 minutes for the video device to connect to the router.
  6. The video device is connected when the status LED on the camera stays solid green.

To reconnect a video device to a Wi-Fi network using Access Point (AP) Mode:

This method applies to all AP Mode-enabled Alarm.com video devices.

Connect a Wi-Fi capable device to the video device’s AP network

  1. Press and hold the WPS/Reset button on the back of the video device for 5 to 7 seconds until the LED starts flashing white.
  2. Using a computer, smartphone, or tablet, connect to the Wi-Fi network named ALARM (##:##:##) . The numbers in parentheses are the last six digits of the video device’s MAC address.

Configure the video device’s Wi-Fi network using the AP mode user interface

  1. Using a web browser on the Wi-Fi capable device, enter 192.168.1.1 in the web browser and press Enter .
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to connect the video device to the customer’s wireless network.
  3. Click Scan for wireless networks .
  4. Click the name of the desired Wi-Fi network.
  5. In the Security Key field, enter the Wi-Fi password.
  6. Click Ok in the pop-up window that appears asking to refer to the website.

Wait for the video device to connect

  • Wait for the LED to turn solid green, and then try to view live video on the ADC Website or app. If the video device’s LED does not turn solid green, reboot the video device and retry this procedure.

To reconnect a video device to a Wi-Fi network using an Ethernet cable:

This method applies to all Alarm.com video devices with an Ethernet port.

Connect the video device to the router using an Ethernet cable

  1. Disconnect power from the video device.
  2. Find an Ethernet/Cat5 cable that reaches from the video device to the router. This may require taking the video device down from its mounting location and bringing it to the router temporarily.
  3. Plug one end of the Ethernet cable into the video device and the other end into the router. Typically, the router has LAN ports that are numbered one through four. Any of these ports should work.
  4. Reconnect power to the video device, and wait for the video device’s status LED to turn solid green. Once the video device’s LED turns solid green, the new wireless information is ready to be programmed.

Configure the video device’s wireless network settings

For more information about configuring a video device’s wireless settings using the Alarm.com Website, see here.

Power down the video device and disconnect the Ethernet cable

  1. Disconnect power from the video device.
  2. Remove the Ethernet cable from the video device and router.
  3. Reconnect power to the video device, and wait for the video device’s status LED to turn solid green.

If all preceding methods have failed

  1. For connection methods other than WPS, verify that the wireless credentials being used are correct by connecting to the network with another device (e.g., smartphone, tablet, etc.).
  2. Delete the video device from the Alarm.com account. This is done from the Video Device Info section in Video > Settings (ADC Website only).
  3. Perform a factory reset on the camera and reconnect.
  4. Connect the video device to the new wireless network using the previous procedures.

Reconnect an ADC-VDB770 if the wireless network or router changes

If the ADC-VDB770 disconnects from the network due to networking hardware replacement (e.g., a new router or access point) or Wi-Fi settings change, reconnect the device using AP mode or WPS.

Reconnect the VDB770 using AP mode:

  1. The camera is in Access Point (AP) mode when the button LED is blinking white. If necessary, access AP mode by holding down the doorbell button for 35-40s and release when the LED turns to blinking white.
  2. Using a Wi-Fi-capable device (e.g., smartphone or computer), find and connect to the camera’s network; the SSID should have the format ADC-VDB770 (XX:YY:ZZ) where XX:YY:ZZ is the last 6 characters of the MAC address, which is printed on the included reference card.
  3. On the same device, open a web browser and enter http://vdb770install or 192.168.1.1 in the web address field. Follow the on-screen instructions to add the ADC-VDB770 to the Wi-Fi network. Verify the LED turns solid green, indicating the connection is complete.

Reconnect the VDB770 using WPS:

Note : Not all routers have the WPS feature. If WPS is unavailable, use AP mode to reconnect the VDB770.

  1. Press and hold the doorbell button on the VDB770 for 30-40 seconds until the button LED starts blinking blue.
  2. Put the router, access point, or Wi-Fi extender into WPS mode. This typically involves pressing the WPS button on the networking device. Refer to the manufacturer’s manual for more information.
  3. Wait approximately 2 minutes for the VDB770 to connect. Verify that the button LED turns solid green.

Troubleshooting

  1. If there are issues connecting the Alarm.com Video Doorbell to the account, power cycle the camera by pressing and holding the main button for 60-70 until the LED starts blinking yellow. After the camera reboots, try connecting again.
  2. If possible, power cycle the networking device that the camera is connected to, or move the camera closer to the networking device.
  3. If issues persist, factory reset the Alarm.com Video Doorbell by pressing and holding the main button for at least 75 seconds until the LED starts blinking red and green. The camera will reboot with factory defaults.
  • You will need to delete the camera from the Video Device Info tab in the ADC website and start the connection from scratch.

Important : If the camera was previously installed to an Alarm.com account, it will need to be deleted before it can be installed again.

To reconnect the SkyBell Doorbell Camera Wi-Fi using the mobile app

  1. Put the doorbell into Access Point (AP) mode by holding the main button until the LED alternates green and red.
  2. Log into the mobile app.
  3. Tap Menu
  4. Tap Doorbell Camera .
  5. Tap Settings Gear
  6. Tap Add Camera
  • If Add Camera does not appear, you may have reached the maximum number of video devices the service package allows. Remove the SkyBell Doorbell Camera from the account, then re-enroll it using the Customer app. This will likely need to be done if you only have the Video Doorbell Only add-on through Surety as it only allows for one Doorbell Camera.
  1. In Select Video Device, tap to select the desired device.
  2. Proceed through the installation wizard. This is the same process as the initial installation of the SkyBell Doorbell Camera.
