Car Play Integration : Why Not?

I know the question of CarPlay integration has been asked, only to always be answered with “Not at this time and no news of when”

My Question is “WHY?” has anyone asked ADC an received a straight answer? Obviously arming, opening garage doors, Disarming, Checking Status from your car dash is something a lot of people would want.

As far as I can tell, this isn’t something that’s being planned at all. I have put in a request for this feature however.

As for why it doesn’t exist, I could not say. Alarm.com support doesn’t typically have this type of information.

I have reached out to see if I can get any additional information on the topic and will follow up once I find something out, one way or the other.

Have you reached out to Apple before regarding this feature?

I’ve never reached out to Apple as I don’t think they are the barrier. I think it’s Alarm.com that does not want to do this, but am not sure. I am guessing its because they don’t want to do anything that may expose their customers to another form of automation that they may jump on (Apple Home). Just my theory

I’ve tried the shortcut Siri workaround but its clunky as I have 3 garage doors and that means 6 commands (open and shut for each door)

Not sure this is something you’d like to get into, however homebridge (https://homebridge.io) is a solution that will interface your alarm.com ecosystem into Apple’s HomeKit via a Plug-in.

This then allows things like your garage doors (and all of your alarm.com ecosystem, actually) to be in Apple Home on your phone, and thereby in CarPlay. While I haven’t tested the CarPlay interactions with Garage doors myself, it appears that it should work. Certainly I see and can control all my alarm.com items from HomeKit without issue.

Edit to add:
I just tested with my garage doors. In my case I have the Linear door controllers. Apple HomeKit would not trigger the doors to open or close because they aren’t a certified accessory (I’m thinking for safety’s sake). But the status of the doors (open or closed) did update immediately in HomeKit. So no good for your use case, unless you have a different door controller than Linear and may have a different outcome.

I have been able to verify that this integration is not on the roadmap at this time. As per why this integration is not available, I could not definitively say but if I am able to track that down, I will follow up here.

Alarm.com for CarPlay is now available.

Went to check it out and could not find it. Checked my carplay settings and the ADC icon was not showing to add. Is there a setting the actual ADC app I need to turn on as I could not find that either

Have you updated to the latest Alarm.com iOS app version 5.10.1? It’s in that update.

That did the trick. Thanks

Its a bit useless. It says I have devices not compatible with Carplay so the only things I can do is arm the alarm. NO Garage door or lock control. Went to the settings to try and add those and its not showing as able to add.

Chamberlain does not allow MyQ control through this Apple CarPlay integration.

More information on features and requirements for Apple CarPlay can be found here:

thanks. Can I include the garage door in a “scene” as a workaround? I suspect most people want the ability to control garage doors the most out of all this and Chamberlain probably has the most market share

No. Chamberlain does not allow its MyQ devices to be included in Alarm.com’s Apple CarPlay integration. Chamberlain and Liftmaster MyQ garage devices and any Scenes that include one or more MyQ garage devices will be hidden from the CarPlay app.

It’s disappointing that Chamberlain won’t allow it but not surprising. Their goal is to push people to use MyQ. Controlling the garage door from the car through a separate app makes MyQ a lot less important. Although it would be nice if they would consider it given that they are the only garage solution that charges integration partners a per-user fee to use their APIs. Frustrating.

I’m thinking about giving in. The only hesitation I have at this point is that When I run a scene via ADC to arm at night, I have it close all my garage doors just to be sure.

How do you normally open/close your MyQ garage doors from your car now? Given that they’re connected to Alarm.com.

Built in opener button in the car. But the range is horrible and often takes multiple tries. I can use the ADC app, but then have to get out of my pocket, Face ID, which sometimes doesn’t work, so I type password. Open app find garage door icon, open. I’m sure you can see why I was excited about the prospect of it appearing on CarPlay.

An alternative may be setting up a scene widget to the phone’s home screen. Not exactly one touch, or through CarPlay, but may be an option for you.

Another option that might work, in theory, would be to put the myQ garage doors on the myQ app instead of Alarm.com and add something like this:

Then connect those inputs to a Linear Z-Wave or Aladdin Connect Garage Door Controller for Alarm.com. Since the Linear or Aladdin Connect could be controlled through CarPlay, this could be a workaround. Couldn’t say for certain as we haven’t tested this.
