For those of you using MYQ Garage Doors, you have noticed that these garage doors will not show up on Carplay. This is probably the #1 feature you want with Carplay as you can have it on your dash, not fumble with your phone, not leave garage door openers in your car for security reasons, and not have to deal with Homelink Programing!
I installed this inexpensive solution:
Installation is very easy and there are not wires to hook up. you just program and everything is wireless. There is a tilt sensor that is included. You can essentially now not have to use MyQ through ADC with this solution and now the garage door shows up in Carlay!
This is also a great, inexpensive way to integrate Alarm.com with your older “non Smart” garage door openers.
I installed a reed switch to the device and it works Great and eliminates the tilt senor and another battery powered wireless device. It works perfectly and was easy to install except that when the garage is open it says closed and when closed it says open.
This is because you need a “normally open” reed switch and I think they normally come normally closed.
In step 3 when it says Trigger the external contact to the “open” state, I suspect that means when you program it, if you have the terminals connected (closed) then it will work as a normally open sensor, and if you have the terminals disconnected (open) then it will work as a normally closed sensor. Not sure but that’s how I interpret it.
It would be unusual for a door contact input to be normally open because most door contacts are normally closed. But anything’s possible.
Update: The external contact input is normally open (NO).
I had the reed sensor wired up. I then plugged in the unit and did the programing. This would seem to align with what you instructed. It didn’t work. will have the normally open sensor tomorrow and will report back
According to my theory, if you had the sensor wired up and closed when you programmed then it would be programmed as normally open, in which case switching to a normally open sensor would work.
There should be a sticky suggesting that people buy Genie or some other compatible opener if they want to use ADC. No way to know that until you get well into it like I have.
Thanks! We heard from someone that the GDZW7-ECO “has varying success connecting to Security V2, MyQ/WiFi openers with a round, yellow learn button”. I’m glad to hear it worked with yours.
If the wireless Security+ 2.0 control doesn’t work for some people then I think they could work around it by adding a Security+ 2.0 Wired Dry Contact Adapter and using the relay switch output on the GDZW7-ECO to control it instead. I may need to order one to test this.
Hopefully the wireless Security+ 2.0 control on the GDZW7-ECO with work for most/all people who try it.
I spoke to Ecolink about this and you are correct. The external contact input is normally open (NO) and not programmable like I thought. That’s unusual but it sounds like you have the solution arriving today.
Confirming that using a Normally Open reed switch works and eliminates the need for the tilt sensor making the setup more responsive and reliable. Installed it today
