Garage Door Support

I have new MyQ openers. While I know I can pair it directly with Alarm.com, that requires that I not use the MyQ app which has some useful features like diagnostics.

So, I’d like to use a zwave opener to connect to alarm.com. Unfortunately the Eco link device previously recommended doesn’t work well with newer Liftmaster openers. As an alternative I was thinking of getting ratgdo and then using a zooz relay to activate it. I’d then need a tilt sensor to report status back to Alarm.com. My question is: is it possible to pair the zooz relay and the tilt sensor together on the back end so that they read as one “garage controller” for alarm.com? I believe a similar approach is used sometimes for auto water shutoffs, so thought it might be a possibility.

No, Alarm.com won’t show a Zooz relay as a garage door. It would show up as a light switch.

If the Ecolink controller won’t work wirelessly with your MyQ opener then I recommend using the relay output on the Ecolink garage controller and wire it to a MyQ wall button. Unfortunately, Chamberlain doesn’t put accessible terminals on the wall button contact to connect wires to. But Garadget sells modified MyQ wall buttons with wires soldered to the button contact as described here. That seems like the simplest solution to me.

Thanks that makes sense. Out of curiosity, why do you prefer Ecolink vs the Linear opener?

The biggest reason is it supports Z-Wave Long Range so with panels that support LR it can communicate from further away, and more reliably, than the linear controller. We’ve seen people report the linear controller not working reliably. Being in the garage (possibly far from the control panel), we think that’s usually caused by Z-Wave communication problems. LR means you don’t have to rely on a multi-hop path to the control panel for longer distances.

In addition to that, it runs a newer version of Z-Wave so I would expect there to be improvements and bug fixes included. I liked how it worked with MyQ openers wirelessly until Chamberlain tweaked the protocol. That and the Ecolink controller costs less than the Linear.

FYI the Ecolink GDZW7-ECO is being replaced by the GDZW7-LR which I believe has a better tilt sensor and some minor UX enhancements. But it doesn’t change anything with MyQ wireless compatibility.
