Is the Garadget adapter still needed to connect the Ecolink Garage Door Controller to a Liftmaster opener? The instructions seem to imply that it will work and tell you how to pair it to a garage door opener with a yellow learn button (security+ 2.0), but I cannot seem to get it to work. I’ve followed the pairing instructions several times, but I cannot seem to get it to open or close the door. I see the door and the status in alarm.com, but opening or closing doesn’t actually open or close the door. I’d hate to purchase the adapter if it isn’t needed.
Plug the garage door opener power cord back into the 120 VAC outlet.
To switch between Security+ 2.0 and Security+ modes on the GDZW7-LR, press and hold the HUB button for 2 seconds.
Security+ 2.0 mode: speaker beeps twice, Status LED blinks twice
Security+ mode: speaker beeps once, Status LED blinks once
Repeat until you’re in the desired mode.
Press the pairing button on the back of the garage door opener motor and check that a status LED indicates pairing mode.*
Press and hold the TILT button on the GDZW7-LR for 2 seconds. The speaker should beep twice, and the GDZW7-LR will transmit like a remote.
Check that the garage door opener’s status LED is no longer in pairing mode.*
To test the pairing, press and hold the TILT button on the GDZW7-LR for 2 seconds. If pairing was successful, the garage door opener will start to move.
The Ecolink GDZW7-ECO and later model GDZW7-LR originally worked with MyQ security+ 2.0 when it was released in 2011. It worked fine for years and then they started seeing issues with it.
What we have found is that if the garage door motor is produced from 2011-2021 to be very high, 2021-2022 to also be high, but with 2023 production and later is where the success rate is varying.
It seems like an update was made to the protocol that Ecolink hasn’t been able to reverse engineer.
If you have a newer MyQ opener then getting it to work with the GDZW7-LR is hit or miss. That’s why we started recommending the Garadget adapter as a workaround. The Garadget adapter is an actual MyQ wall button and they solder wires to the physical button terminals. So it doesn’t have any compatibility issues.
Thanks Ryan. It’s brand spankin’ new. After reading the Ecolink manual stating that 2.0 was suported, I wasn’t sure if maybe there was some sort of update since the post recommending the Garadget device. I’ll pick one up. I assume either the wired or wireless will work equally well? I was planning on getting the wired version.
We don’t have a much hands-on experience with these. They’re a work-around we found after people started reporting problems. I was going to recommend getting a 883LM, open it up and solder, but then discovered there is a company that sells them pre-rigged like that.
I would also go with the wired but I assume wireless would work equally well.
TL;dr - try the Garadget wireless controller to connect with the Security+ 2.0 opened.
I was just hopping on here to see if anyone had a similar setup. I recently installed the Ecolink Garage Door Controller on my new Liftmaster Security+ 2.0 opener. It didn’t work with the direct wire. It didn’t work with the remote via Ecolink controller. It works intermittently with the garadget wired adapter. The issue I’m having is that after several cycles, the garadget gets out of sync and I need to climb the ladder, press the Garadget button 3 times and it resumes working. I was advised to try the garadget wireless controller to resolve this issue.
That’s interesting! I would have expected the wired model to be at least as reliable as the wireless. It’s literally a LiftMaster 883LM with wires soldered to the button terminals, right? How could it be hit or miss? Did they explain why?
My understanding is that as I have the 880LMW Smart Control Panel Wall Station, this can not be used with other wired stations, including the 883LM. Liftmaster suggested the wireless 885LM as an alternative.
Multiple customers have reported a problem using the Ecolink GDZW7-LR with the Garadget Wired Dry Contact Adapters. We’re investigating the issue and will provide an update when we have a solution.
In the meantime, we recommend that everyone using the GDZW7-LR with a Garadget Security+ adapter use the wireless adapters. The Garadget Wireless Dry Contact Adapters have worked well in every case we’re aware of.
We’ve updated our How To articles to reflect this.
