Doorbell Video on IQR-PG

Hello. I read on an old thread that IQR-PG cannot be connected via PowerG if you want to use it for live video. Is that still true?

If so, has anyone asked Qolsys for this to change by any chance?

I just called IQ to confirm if this was still the case and they said yes, the IQR-PG needs to be connected via Wi-Fi only in order to get the option to live view the front doorbell.

Thank you

That’s a bummer. Do you think it decreases the effectiveness of my alarm system by switching the keypads from powerg to wifi?

if I switch, is there a setting? Or do I have to delete the devices and reinstall?

Thank you SO much for taking the time to call them!

Connecting them to Wi-Fi does affect the battery life and reliability of the IQR-PG.

The main panel has a battery backup to keep the main panel running for 24 hours. The IQR-PG can also run for about 24 hours when on PowerG if there is a power outage. If the IQR-PG is connected via Wi-Fi, then the running time on battery decreases to about 6 hours.

Also, it will rely on your Wi-Fi to keep running. If switching, I would recommend you install a UPS(Uninterruptible Power Supply) on your router and modem to keep it running incase of a power outage.

If you would like to change over to Wi-Fi, it will need to be deleted, the IQR-PG will need to be defaulted, and then learned back in.

Let us know if you have any additional questions

Thank you

As a user of the Remote PG via WiFi I’ll add, in addition to all the true caveats Vidail mentioned, I think the Remote PG works way better on WiFi than PowerG.

Probably an unpopular opinion, but in addition to the doorbell working it is just so much faster. I found that PowerG instituted a delay in commands. So in my case verbal announcements for doors opening, etc were chaotic since you can hear both keypads at the same time in one area of my house and they were talking over each other with a massive delay between the two. Arming/disarming was also never in great sync with primary panel.

Connected via WiFi they are both talking at the same time. And arm/disarms are in lock step.

YMMV of course. Just my experience. So to compensate I made sure my WiFi is rather robust with full ups protection where needed.

Thank you very much!

Oh wow this makes a lot of sense. My IQR-PGs are delayed and out of sync as well. How big of a UPS are you using?

do you get concerned about the potential of jamming with wifi vs powerg?

If by effectiveness you mean security, no I don’t think it decreases the security of your system because the keypad isn’t used for detecting intrusions like sensors are.

I’m not a person that is concerned with jamming at all. I don’t subscribe to that paranoia. I’m a believer in security layers - cameras with internal SD cards or POE, local storage, locks, nosy neighbors, the security system, my dog, etc.

At the end of the day if you want it - just take it. I have insurance. If everything is down my dog detects things far better than any alarm product! (Sad but true) however I’m not in a high crime area.

I also have clients (I’m not in the security industry but rather IT) with security systems in bad areas and they get robbed anyway. Alarms blaring and police notified, cameras watching. They know they have 20 min police response time so they steal and leave. They don’t even need to jam!

Anyway when it comes to WiFi being down I don’t see the big deal since it is just a remote keypad. The system is actually the main IQ 4 so it’s going to work even if WiFi is down. My WiFi cameras are fragile but in my case I don’t care. If I did I’d use POE cameras.

My network is all UniFi with all APs hardwired POE. At each switch (since they are distributed and not in one place) I have a small cyber power ups. I also installed small ups in my garage to keep my ONT powered for the internet. I periodically do tests and replace batteries every two years or so. My network tends to stay up for about 2 hours without any power before critical ups runs dry. Seemed good enough for me.

I should also say I have my critical exterior adc cameras on the same ups’s as well.

Very very good points! Thanks for sharing ur opinion.

You’re right, it’s really just solely a keypad I guess. If it gets disconnected or jammed, it won’t stop the alarm from working or me from being able to have control with my phone.

I have doorbell video working when paired PG.

The recent update enabled this.

Interesting. Maybe it’s different for IQ pro?

Could be. I don’t see any recent updates for pro, but I’m not running pro. I only see what’s posted.

This is not available for the IQ Pro currently. Qolsys indicates this should be included in a future FW update for the IQ Pro but there is not ETA at this time.

Thanks, Tyler! This will be a great improvement so I hope they prioritize it soon!
