When I ask Alexa to do something like turn off the light, she does it, but then says something went wrong with the device? Every command works; she just follows up with something went wrong with the device. I can’t find anything wrong. Please advise.
Happy to help look into this.
Do you get that follow up on every single command, or does it ever sometimes work without the error follow up?
When did this behavior start?
Are you using the smart home skill or the standard Alarm.com skill?
Most every time on the commands. I’m using smart home skill. It started when I linked my account to the Alexa app. Please advise.
It started when I linked my account to Alexa alarm.com home skill. It happens every day, but not on all switches every time?
Thanks for your patience! We checked your account and reached out to Alarm.com. Your light commands are all going through on our end, but two of your lights are showing some signs of trouble: the Pantry Light and the Shed Light.
Alarm.com let us know that Alexa can report an error when a light’s status gets out of sync, even if the command itself works. Could you try the following for those two lights?
Make sure both stay powered and aren’t being switched off at the wall or breaker
Power cycle them
Manually toggle each one on and off at the switch
Also, which switches do you usually hear the error on? If it’s mostly the Pantry and Shed Lights, that’ll help us narrow it down. If it’s happening on others too, let us know which ones.
We checked with Alarm.com, and their recommendation is to unlink and re-link the Alarm.com Smart Home skill in the Alexa app. This will also rediscover your devices. Once that’s done, give your lights a test with Alexa and let us know if you still get the error.
Here’s our guide on linking Alexa with your Alarm.com account if it helps: How To Pair Amazon Alexa with your Alarm.com Account
I don’t even use commands on the shed and pantry. It’s happening in master bedroom, master fan, bathroom, kitchen, etc. basically, all of them.
Thanks, that helps narrow it down. Were you able to try unlinking and re-linking the Alarm.com Smart Home skill yet? If so, are you still getting the error afterward? Also, which Alexa device are you using (Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Show, etc.)?
Not yet, but this morning, the switches that I used didn’t give me any errors? I’ll follow up with you this afternoon when I get home after I try the others.
Sounds good, thanks for the update! If the error comes back on any of them, give the unlink and re-link a try and let us know how it goes.
Will do!
Relinking didn’t make any difference. It’s still random on all switches. I’ll have one switch not do it. Go to another switch and get the issue, then go back to the one that didn’t fault and it does it. Please advise
Thanks for testing that and for the detailed description. We’re taking this back to Alarm.com for a closer look. In the meantime, which Alexa device are you using (Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Show, etc.)? That’s one of the details they asked about.
I have all echo dots except for 1 which is the round cylinder shape.
Thanks for that! We’re reaching out to Alarm.com with everything you’ve shared and will follow up here as soon as we hear back.
Thanks for your patience on this! Here’s a rundown of what we found.
What we checked:
We reviewed your Alarm.com account and worked with Alarm.com support directly. Your event history shows every light command completing successfully, and your devices are functioning normally and responding to voice commands. Alarm.com confirmed that everything looks good on their end.
What we tried:
Unlinking and re-linking the Smart Home skill was Alarm.com’s first recommendation. Since that didn’t change anything, and the commands are going through on the Alarm.com side, the error appears to be coming from Alexa itself.
Next step:
Alarm.com let us know that the logs for Alexa voice commands are kept on Amazon’s side, so Amazon Alexa support is the best team to dig into this. When you contact them, it may help to share:
- You’re using the Alarm.com Smart Home skill
- Alexa performs the light command, then says “something went wrong with the device”
- It happens randomly across all your switches, even ones that worked fine moments before
- It started when you first linked the Smart Home skill
- Unlinking and re-linking the skill didn’t help
- You’re using multiple Echo Dots and one cylinder-shaped Echo
- Alarm.com confirmed the commands are completing on their end
Let us know what Amazon finds, and if anything comes up on the Alarm.com side, we’re happy to take another look!
I spoke with Amazon about the issue and they told me that Alarm.com didn’t want to update their end with Alexa+ which is causing the issue. They said they have been getting a lot of calls about the Alarm.com issues.
Happy to reach out to Alarm.com about this to get some more details from the source.
I will see if Alarm.com has any details on Alexa+ and whether it is expected to be supported.
Thank you, Jason! If this happens to be the case. Do you have any suggestions such as another hub like smart things?
