I am with Alarm.com and currently have a GC3 panel. I will be going to the EDGE or the Qolsys 1Q4. is there recommendations (on the panels and specifically for what type of zWave devices to use for light switches, outlets, dimmers etc?

Panel choice is of course up to you, though we recommend Qolsys over 2GIG.
2GIG still does not publish a confirmed compatible list of Z-wave devices to my knowledge. However, with regard to switches and dimmers, the vast majority of single function Z-wave switches and dimmers should work, given their simplicity.
Qolsys maintains a confirmed compatibility list.
