Yale YRD256 Z-Wave S2 Error

On pairing my YRD256 (firmware version 4.300c per the box) I get this error:

““Device successfully included using Z-Wave S0 security. Please note: If this device supports Z-Wave S2 security, the S2 encryption process may have failed. Please exclude the device and begin the include process again.”

I have excluded and re-paired a number of times including with the panel next to the door with the same result.

However the lock seems to be working.

So my question: Is this an issue (not being S2 encrypted and how would one fix it?).

The lock supports Z-Wave Plus but I don’t know if that includes S2. I can’t seem to find anywhere in the panel UI that tells me if it actually is S2 encrypted. I have also looked to see if there is a way to ensure I have the latest firmware on the lock but haven’t figured out how to do that.

Thanks!

It isn’t a problem in terms of functionality, if the lock does not support S2 it will revert to using S0.

That device is using 6.51 Z-wave according to your panel’s reported details.

Thanks Jason,

Does it using 6.51 mean it is using S2 or not?

I know the lock does support S2.

Whether or not the lock supports S2, it is using S0, based on the message from your system.

It would be beneficial to update to the latest manual patch tag version 2.5.4 and test. 2.5.2 and 2.5.3 have some known S2 issues with Schlage locks at least.

use patch tag iqpanel2.5.4 then upgrade using network

Updated firmware to 2.5.4, cleared lock and re-enrolled. Same message. Also did z-wave network rediscovery to be sure. All with the panel directly next to the lock.

Starting to think it’s an issue with this particular lock and alarm.com. Is there a list of locks that are confirmed to support S2 with the IQPanel?

I don’t have a list of locks supporting S2, but 6.81 is required I believe. 6.81 is the version which enabled S2 protocol for the IQ Panel 2+, and your device at 6.51 will not support S2.

Looking at equipment data, all devices I see using S2 report 6.81 versions.

With Yale you may be able to just replace the Z-wave module in the lock to an updated version.

Double check your z-wave module. I don’t believe the Yale Z-Wave plus v2 which supports S2 is available in the US, only Europe. I looked into this a while ago when I bought an additional lock but purchased the module separately. Z-Wave Plus does not necessarily mean S2 or Smart Start. My lock falls back to S0 as well. I saw they had a part number to release the US version, but hadn’t yet.

Yeah Yale support has been unhelpful.

First they said it was a software issue and therefore alarm.com’s problem then when I pushed they said the lock “has the latest S2 firmware”.

Your answer actually makes sense. So it’s return to Amazon for this lock and I’ll just replace it with a Schlage that has S2, works with alarm.com and has a higher ANSI rating anyway.

How does one update the firmware on the YRD256 Z-wave or AYR202-ZWV-USA ?

There is no method to do so that I am aware of to update firmware on the module.

You need a Yale 700 series Z-Wave module for S2, which is a BLACK module P/N AYR-MOD-ZW3-US. The locks that ship with this module included have “ZW3” in the part number on the box.

The locks with “ZW2” in their part number on the box include the 500 series GREEN module AYR202-ZWV-USA which does S0 only.

I talked to Yale a few months ago about when those modules would be shipping with locks and available as standalone and they had no ETA. Supply chain caused a huge delay in them getting to market. This module WILL be sold in the USA as standalone and included with newly produced locks, whenever they sort out their supply chain issues.

I sorted this all out back in March when I purchased a YRD216-ZW2-619 (this is the variant with tactile keys and cylinder) and found out it was S0 only. I lucked out and found two brand new YRD216-ZW3-619’s on eBay and they had the USA spec S2 module. I have those installed in my home and connected to my IQ4 using S2.

There is no way to update firmware on the Z-Wave modules as an end user, and a firmware update will not add S2 to the 500 series module.
