Video Surveillance Setup

Looking to setup Video Surveillance.

Thinking SkyBell HD for the front door.

I have 2 other areas to setup outdoor cameras. This is where I had some questions.

I can a) Use a compatible ADC Video Camera - Simply install, supply power and connect to wifi.

b) What is the ADC-VS121 & ADC-VS420? This makes it so I can use any 3rd party camera? Simply install the camera, supply power to it, and run coax video line to this server, and connect to hardwire network. Going this route, what are better cameras to go with for quality opposed to the ADC ones?

What does the Stream Video Recorder (SVR) do? It allows for video recordings to be stored to local drives instead of the cloud? I dont have to pay for video monitoring service this way?

Thanks for the info and help to get this setup!

Those are Alarm.com Video servers which are for analog cameras. AHD, analog high definition, cameras are available, but one of the drawbacks is having to run cabling back to a central point to connect to the Video server.

The Video servers are typically only cost effective if you already have an Analog system installed, or if you are looking to use more than 4 cameras.

The SVR is a local storage option for 24/7 recording of ADC cameras. It integrates with your account, and is in addition to Cloud Storage, not instead. It requires Cloud Video (any level) and the SVR service add-on, shown near the bottom of this page.

Since I’m building new, running wires is no big deal for me. I guess my question is can I get a better resolution camera to use and just hook up to the vs420? And will any cameras hooked up to the vs420 work with the SVR? or will SVR only work with specified ADC cameras?

Wireless cameras dont seem that great. You still have to drill, fish, and run power to the camera. PoE seems more logical for easy hookup, but seems like the newer ADC isnt PoE.

Is it cheaper and better option to forgo ADC and do stand alone DVR camera system with app?
Thanks for the insight!

Compatible models with the SVR are as follows:

ADC-V520, ADC-V520IR, ADC-V620PT, ADC-V720, ADC-V720W, ADCV721W, ADC-V820, ADC-VS120, ADC-VS121, and ADC-VS420

The best resolution I know of for Analog HD is 1080. However, I just double checked and the VS420 has a resolution limit of 704 x 480, (it was always intended for legacy cctv systems) so that would not work in this case.

There are a couple non-wireless POE options as far as ADC cameras go. The V720 and V820 would work.

Pretty much any DVR system will have an app for it these days, with varying degrees of quality.

If you go stand-alone, Analog HD cameras are pretty affordable, but keep in mind the DVR will have a recording resolution limit, so you will want to research one that will record at HD resolution.

Getting to one central point is still more difficult in most circumstances, but yes, there is still some cabling involved with wireless.

If you are looking for POE IP cameras, the field is wide open and there are a lot of options, and extreme resolution can be had if that’s a desire. (Although the price skyrockets)
