Terminology: Is it the right side window or left side window?

What is the correct location/descriptor for window?

For example, alarm activates for window, neighbor is dispatched to see why alarm activated and she walks around from the front right to the back side of the house, but which to check? she only has time to look at ONE window. More importantly, which is really the back right window for police intrusion point (e.g., if described in police report)?

Depending on whether you are looking in or out, each could be the right window…

So which SHOULD be the ACTUAL “back right window” win 1 or win 2?

When programming descriptors, should “left” or “right” be from the perspective of interior or exterior? or from front to back as though looking at a blueprint on paper?

Outside looking in facing front:

Inside looking out facing back:

I don’t think there is a right answer.

Many systems I’ve worked with have used right & left from the perspective of the person inside the house. For installation and maintenance the inside perspective makes more sense but from a police and neighbor perspective the outside perspective makes more sense.

When installing new systems I have usually preferred to use north, south, east and west instead of right and left. It helps avoid this problem. The down side is your neighbors might not all be directionally inclined so they might have to think for a minute.

The cops are going to look all the way around the house unless there is a fence they can’t get into. I think most installers just look for a naming convention that they can easily follow when installing and maintaining.

I like the directional idea. I may redo my descriptors and then inform data entry.
