supplement MyQ garage door with magnetic reed sensor?

I’ve got a 2gig GC2 panel with Alarm.com monitoring, along with LiftMaster MyQ controls (888LM+828LM) for controlling & monitoring my garage door. Works well.

Even though I already have MyQ control & monitoring of my garage, I’m considering adding a hard-wired magnetic reed sensor for my garage door. Am I correct in thinking that the MyQ monitoring only lets me see the garage status as reported by the Liftmaster equipment? In other words, the MyQ monitoring will not detect if the garage door has been opened due to forced intrusion (e.g. manual defeating of the garage door locking mechanism). Is that right?

The reason I ask is because several posts on this board seems to position MyQ as an alternative to a tilt/magnetic sensor. I understand that MyQ also gets me door control (vs ‘monitoring-only’ with a sensor), but it seems that a physical sensor is actually superior for monitoring in that it can monitor the true physical state of the garage door, rather than what the MyQ controller thinks is the state (which may not be the case following a forced intrusion).

Is this reasoning sound, or am I missing something?
To be clear, I intend to set up this sensor as “no response” type, so it will not trigger an alarm. I would just like to be able to confidently tell whether or not a garage door is currently open or not.

Thanks.

PS - First post here. Wishing I had found this forum sooner. Had a local security company install my first ever alarm system last week. Went searching for tips on configuring my 2gig controller and found you guys here. I had no idea DIY was an option. Will almost certainly switch to this once my contract is up.

Great question, had to stop and think about it. I do think your assumption is correct. Not sure there is a mechanism to report it being open, but I am looking into that if the door is opened using the 888 and 828. (The 821 is easy, as it has a tilt sensor which tells it what orientation the door is in.)

If you are looking for sensor activity notifications/left open notifications, I would typically recommend using an overhead contact switch anyway. If you end up wanting to use it as an alarm sensor, you would have to have one.

Thanks for the reply, Jason.

I’m referring to this type of unwanted garage entry: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kSO_HTBHLFI

I’m new here so I’m not sure if it will let me post a link or not, but if not, search YouTube for “The 6 Second Garage Door Break-In You Can Prevent”. This was aired recently by our local new station. (!!!)

I don’t think my MyQ stuff would even be aware of the garage opening, in this case. And if that turns out to be the case, then I’ll go ahead an add the overhead contact switch.

Yes, with the 888 and 828, if the motor is not engaged to draw the door it will not report a change in state, so you will want to use another sensor as well for that purpose.
