Schlage vs other locks in regard to problems

Hi,
I just installed a new Wave-Plus version of the Schlage Connect BE469ZP. I find that locking/unlocking remotely is a hit-or-miss affair. Fifty percent of the time, commands to lock or unlock, whether initiated from the ADC Android app or directly from the Qolsys IQ2+ panel go ignored.
Looking through the forums shows me that Schlage continues to be a thorn in the side of the DIY ADC community. Is there a different lock that is more reliable? Thank you.

I had the same lock as you, it was good up until I upgraded it to the 6.81 SDK z-wave version, that’s when the problems started happening as you described. I switched over to Kwikset and I get a hundred percent reliability with those.

Thank you!! May I ask what model you use?

Kwikset 914’s with my IQ2 panel.

Since I have been troubleshooting these systems there have been a few widespread cases where Schlage/Nexia devices had their compatibility broken due to either changes in those devices or in Z-wave radio software.

I like the physical build quality of the Schlage locks but yes, I have seen more software related issues with them than either Yale or Kwikset models.

Just in case, it’s still important to make sure general Z-wave network issues aren’t present otherwise you may see the same issues with other models. It looks like that is the only Z-wave device currently connected. If the device has no repeating neighbors it will be more likely to drop messages if 25-30+ feet away from the panel.

Thank you. The lock is about 15 feet away with a clear line of site. I’m just going to exchange it at Home Depot where I got it for the Kwikset 916. Same price there: $179

Well, I installed the Kwikset 916 and…WOW!!! SOOOO much better than the Schlage, Qolsys/ZWave-wise. It locks/unlocks within seconds of the command being sent from the panel or phone, and does so every time!! And, the status on the panel/phone is updated almost instantly as well.
A HUGE plus is that the lock/unlock event occurs even if the lock is operated by the indoor knob, which is something the Schlage has never done! I had three of the previous version of the Schlage locks on a GC2 for the better part of five years, and I could actually never arm my alarm system because I knew that my kids would manage to trigger the alarm in the morning by unlocking the door to let the dogs out. Further, I had the same issues with respect to responsiveness and status updates with those paired to a GC2. Now, with the Kwikset, with a simple rule and the fact that the manual mechanical unlocking sends the event to the panel, I’m able to disarm the system when the kids unlock the door.
It is disappointing that Schlage doesn’t up its z-wave game. They make a superior lock to Kwikset, but I need to use the Kwikset because it provides the correct and working software functionality that Schlage does not.
Separate from the software/radios, the Schlage is easier and quicker to install, is more ‘solid’ in build and feel, and has a configurable built-in vibration alarm to detect attempts to smash or break-in the door (which does NOT get sent to the alarm panel, by the way).
In summary, the Kwikset is a true z-wave lock, while the Schlage is a lock that had z-wave slapped in haphazardly.

Glad to hear there was such a vast improvement.

Yes, the Schlage Z-wave locks are ANSI grade 1, and Yale and Kwikset Z-wave locks are all ANSI grade 2 I believe, at least all the ones I am aware of.

I hear you. The Schalge is a more industrial-strength lock, but, the flaky z-wave made it no better than a using a string to tie my door shut, so it was a security issue for me.

Rumor has it that the next firmware update for the Qolsys panel (2.5.4?) will specifically address the Schlage issue, but, its a rumor so I wouldn’t hold my breath. Maybe Surety can confirm or not?

Only confirmed changes I know of so far are Liftmaster MyQ related. I sent a message to Qolsys for more info, not sure what all they can share

FYI yes, Qolsys confirmed fixes for Schlage S2 problems are coming in 2.5.4. No exact eta, but soon.
