Problems with WiFi on GC3

Hello I am in the process of changing my controller from the GC2 to the GC3. After upgrading the firmware to 3.1 I attempted to connect the controller to my WiFi and will not connect, under the SSID it shows the message “Authentication problem”

Attempted:

  1. manually entering the IP
  2. reserving an IP for the GC3
  3. removed all security on router (from WPA2 to nothing)
  4. even tried to connect to my neighbor’s open WiFi

Please advice,
Thanks

I’ve noticed this with the first couple tries on a couple test panels, and we’ve seen some issues which appear to be related to the DHCP lease from the router.

You should be able to try again and the authentication error will go away in a subsequent attempt. The best resolution is to assign a static IP to the GC3, selecting manual setup rather than automatic, which bypasses the possible issue with DHCP leases from certain routers.

Good evening, bringing this post back to life…

Same issue here. I am not even able to connect with manual configuration. The panel shows “authentication failed”.

I’ve tried the following, all with no success –

  1. Open network with no password
  2. Created a sperate guest network with a different WPA/WPA2 password
  3. WPS

None of the above work. The only way get the GC3 back on the network is to power cycle the system. This means removing the panel screw, unplugging the battery, pulling the power, waiting 15-20 seconds and reversing these steps. It will then connect for a few days only to fail again which means I have to repeat this process every 3-4 days.

Does 2GIG have anything public to say about this? When can we expect a fix from them? Thanks in advance.

Have you tried the suggestion from above in this thread?

This looks to coincide with DHCP Leases on certain routers. You’ll want to assign a static IP on the GC3 rather than leaving the IP settings on auto.

Under Network Settings - Wireless click on your network, select Manual and type in the desired IP address and correct subnet/gateway/dns.

Yes, I have tried switching the network from Auto to Manual followed by inputting an IP address, subnet, gateway, and DNS all on my local network. Even when this is done I see "failed to connect to network and “authentication problem”.

I know for certain the WPA2 password is correct, works on all my other devices. I also mentioned above trying WPS and an open/no password network, still unable to connect. Only if I reboot the system will it connect and then only for a couple of days, even with manual network settings present.

Even when this is done I see “failed to connect to network and “authentication problem”.

Thank you. And just to verify, all of these attempts have been on the Airport Extreme network?

We’ve reached back out to 2GIG, and they indicated that some updates to wifi were performed in the 3.1 update based on the prior reports from 3.0.2 users regarding authentication errors. The rep we spoke with has escalated the ticket with the engineering dept. and we should hear an update soon.

Yes, all attempts described are being made on Airport Extreme. The only other network that belongs to me is Aiport Extreme 1 which is a guest network I created in an attempt to resolve this.

Thanks for your help and reporting this to 2GIG.

We’re happy to help! If you notice this showing authentication error under the Network Status, can you take a photo of the panel with the error message and post it here? We will send the photo to 2GIG to push to engineers. That usually helps escalated tickets. It looks like this panel is 3.1.

I am having the same issues. I upgraded to the latest firmware through the surety firmware thread. I was getting an intermittent cell radio error all of a sudden in the last week, so I couldn’t arm and disarm my system through the app. My alarm would go off everytime I came home (not to mention I probably lost contact with the central station).

I thought setting up the wifi connection would help. I’ve tried everything: DHCP, static ip, guest network, restarting the gc3 multiple times, trying to connect through Auto and Manual at least 10 times each. At this point, i just want to Network Connection errors to stop happening all through the day and night. Can I just disable wifi on the GC3 or silence the alerts so it stops giving me the error and beeping all the time?

I hate to complain about this panel yet again, but it’s another instance of Nortek/2gig releasing firmware or a product that is not ready for public consumption. I’ve had my gc3 for 18 months after upgrading from a gc2. The original gc3 firmware made my ADC thermostats malfunction. They finally released a firmware update many months later. Then they took forever to release secondary touch screens, some of which I hear are buggy.

Please help. Thanks

Of course, you can acknowledge any alert by tapping the flashing message icon in the top right of the home screen.

To disable trouble alerts for Broadband Network Failure, enter System Settings > Installer Toolbox > System Configuration > Panel Programming. Q34 and Q35 can be used to disable both the Broadband trouble condition and back end reports.

What is the wifi encryption type you are using?

Signaling reports show some intermittent very high registration times, which is an indicator of poor quality signal. It looks like the panel is responding quickly and showing good signaling at the moment, but if this continues, try powering down your panel, transformer first, then battery, for two full minutes. Power up battery first, then transformer.

Firmware 3.1.1 is available and states improvements to GC3 wifi. Link and release notes available here.

I was having similar issues with the GC3 wifi connections when using an Airport Extreme AP. The 3.1.1 firmware update seems to have resolved. Not sure if working due to reboot from firmware update (time will tell), but initially looks like the update may have resolved.

I did spend a little time troubleshooting the previous firmware version 3.1.0 and “authentication problem” as well as the failure of network tests. The GC3 was able to acquire a DHCP lease even with the “authentication problem” wifi error. Packet capture on network showed the GC3 then tried some odd DNS requests based upon gateway IP address but the domain name was always truncated to some odd value. Regardless, the 3.1.1 update seems to have corrected both the wifi authentication error and network tests. Will post update if I find either issue returns with time.

We haven’t noticed the Authentication error issue after the update on a GC3, which is good news since we did typically see it occur a couple times on initial setup, but yes it will take sustained testing to be sure.

Interesting, 2GIG didn’t (and we didn’t expect it) really go into too much detail on the fix, but this is an interesting find.

Everything seems to be working fine after the latest firmware update. Thanks.
