Password limitation on ADC Camera Fix

Hello, I went to set up my ADC v520ir camera to my wireless network but saw an error that said my passphrase could not contain special characters or spaces. That is somewhat concerning, especially for a home security system/company, asking for a passphrase that does not include characters beyond the alphabet, as that is very insecure. Is there a firmware update available for my camera or some other way to join this camera to my wireless network (for which I will not degrade my passphrase) to accommodate the device? The skybell did not have issues with special characters or spaces, so this must be a limitation of the adc camera itself? I’m hoping this is not the case and a quick fw update will resolve

Your V520IR would have older firmware on it which does not support special characters. Current firmware versions do.

Firmware is typically automatically applied during the inclusion process, and can be checked and manually updated via the Video Device Settings page in Alarm.com.

You would need to connect your camera to the network in order to apply the firmware, so either a temporary adjustment of the SSID/Network Key would be needed or a patch cable can be used instead to wire it to your router temporarily.

I have multiple ADC-V523’s. On the latest firmware 0.8.6.018. I’ve never been able to get these cameras on WiFi because my WiFi password contains a backslash (\) character. I was just about to start the long journey of changing my WiFi password to remove the backslash but I just created a list of 50+ devices that I’ll need to update, so that’s not happening! Any other fix? or is there a later Alarm.com camera that supports the backslash? I’ve been ethernet connected, but really would like to be more flexible with camera placement. Thanks!

Thank you for your patience.

Alarm.com mentioned that it is not supported across all cameras. I did put in a request to support this but there’s no guarantee they will work on this.

Does your Wi-Fi router allow you to create another Wi-Fi SSID? If it does, you could create a Wi-Fi SSID just for your cameras. You could also use a Secure Wi-Fi Smart Gateway to create a Wi-Fi network just for your cameras.

Hi. There were posts that seemed to imply that the backslash was allowed in a later Alarm.com firmware but thanks for confirming that’s not true.

It’s interesting that the Alarm.com cameras are the only devices that don’t support the backslash. I have many devices from many different companies and these cameras are the only issue.

I’ve always thought I’d just change the WiFi password but when I finally went to start this adventure the other day it’s not worth the effort. 50+ devices would need to be setup again, and everyone who has come into the house over the years would also need to update their phones, so just going to leave it for now with Ethernet to the cameras.

Thanks for the Gateway idea, I need to look at that, that may be the best option, assuming it will just create a 2nd WiFi SSID though I’ll need to place it central to reach all the cameras. My router (eero) does not support a 2nd regular SSID other than a guest network but not sure that a guest network would work.

Thanks again.
