New Sunset for Light Rules

I just swapped my panel and everything seems to work except for the rules that use the new feature where you can select “sunset” as the time to start the rule (e.g. motion detector turn on light after sunset).

I find the rule a little suspect because there is no “end time” only "at sunset to start. Maybe we can assume it stops at sunrise?

Anyway, these rules are not working for me. Perhaps pushing through my z-wave rules at ADC is a good first step. Unless you have other suggestions?

I don’t actually see any activations of a rule-related motion detector in the history after the rules were created (and after sunset). It may be a case of the sensor’s activation delay causing this particular failure.

Try setting up a rule based on a sensor which can be tested easily like a door sensor. Set up a nearby light to come on after sunset if the door is opened. Any luck?

I am not entirely understanding your post. The fact that you don’t see any rile related motion detector history would seem to support the problem I am outlying?

I certainly can try this but I will say that I have about 5 motion detectors and have used them to trigger lighting in various rooms as I walk into them without fail in the past.

Anyway to resend the rules created to ADC?

All my schedules that are based on sunset and sunrise work BTW

We do not see activity from the Motion detector in the rule after sunset, so we cannot tell when the rule should trigger.

The above suggestion is to rule out the variation between motion detector activation and a door contact. Since what we want to verify is just the functionality of the rule variable - not the specific device it is being triggered by, it is much better to test it with a more immediately reliable trigger like a door sensor.

Wireless motion detectors have built in delays based on activity to save battery life.

Yes, but since this is a new feature it would be best to save that until we’ve proven the variable works for you. If you would like us to go ahead and have ADC do that, we can request it, but I would not suggest it first.

Good news! I expected to hear this after the panel swap.

Actually, I already did this. I opened the left garage door after sunset which should have triggered lights

I forgot about this until now.

In addition…as a test right now I changed one of my rules to “always” instead of after sunset for motion and it turns on the lights without issue

We have had the rules re-sent.

Failed again.

You will see I had it set to be triggered by garage door and master bedroom sliding door. Both did not work. I switched all the rules to a fixed time, except for one test rule (mater bedroom sliding door) so I can test for you until this gets resolved

Well, sunset as a variable was just unrolled last week, so the good news is that ADC is likely actively looking for bugs and may already know what is going on. We’ll check with automation specialists shortly and follow up.

Could you please alert them? I find that their service and followup is not as good as Suretycam’s. I doubt they are that proactive and would appreciate a “push” from you guys who are.

In addition, I find it strange that there is no “off” setting when choosing sunset. Shouldnt there be an off at “sunrise” option?

It is the initial iteration of the rule and no doubt will be adjusted, but currently yes it defaults to starting at sunset and ending at sunrise.

Alarm.com is going to actively track the “Test” rule that was set up using sunset as the variable. Can you leave that rule as it is and try to activate that rule a couple times each night for the next few nights? ADC will review the data to determine where the bug is that’s causing it.

I will keep the test rule and check regularly. I assume you only want me to post when it works?

It does not look like an intermittent issue, so it’s safe to assume it won’t work without outside influence, but yes definitely let us know if that changes and it works without changing the rule. We expect to hear from Alarm.com by early next week if not end of this week with what they have found in the data.

The test rule worked. Changed all my rules to sunset and will let you know We’d morning if it all works. Keep your fingers crossed

Did you guys hear back from ADC that they fixed it? Or did they just fix it and not tell anyone?

We’ve not heard back on this issue specifically yet. We’ll be following up today to make sure ADC has enough data through the last few days of test triggers. Did the test rule work all the time or just worked yesterday?

I kind of forgot about the whole thing and only tested it yesterday. I changed am my rules so it will test test tonight and I will report back

Lights came on at sunset via the rule. Hooray!

Nice. Thank you for following up

I love this feature
