I’m in the process of planning for a new security system around the IQ Panel 4 and have a question about which door lock to select (mostly around Yale locks).
Qolsys only lists devices they have tested themselves on that list so it skews to older devices. The devices I would recommend to stick to are found in the Alarm.com list here.
Z-Wave is secure but it’s worth mentioning that PowerG locks are buy one get one free until Thursday.
PowerG is better than Z-Wave in terms of range, reliability, and battery life.
Z-Wave’s advantages are that it works with other (non-Qolsys/DSC) systems and a wider selection of locks are available. But PowerG is the best when it comes to wireless communication.
Great advice thankyou (I was looking out for Black Friday sales bit didn’t see this)!
I’ll also look to add Qolsys smoke detectors & 13 door/window sesnors and a garage door controller so if there’s any other tips or suggestions feel free
We do not have any specials on sensors like the PowerG automation devices, but I do generally recommend PowerG sensors as the best option. Ryan’s link above describes a lot of benefits.
The PowerG smoke detectors also support one go all go, where the panel will trigger all to sound when one does since communication in PowerG is two way.
Given the price difference between the PowerG & Qolsys (QS1135-840) window sensors, is there a strong argument for PowerG would you say? Our house isn’t overly large (4 bedroom single level), so I don’t think the range should be an issue. But we’d be getting about 13 window/door sensors so that adds up. Encryption & jamming resistance is valued so if it’s much better with PowerG then that would probably justify it.
Also likewise with PIR motion detection, are the powerg devices better as well? Avoiding false positives is appreciated, as we have a medium dog (25 lbs).
The PowerG smoke detector recommendation is a good one, sounds well worth it.
In general, for door contacts, If range is not an issue (which it sounds like is shouldn’t be) Qolsys 319.5MHz S-Line sensors do have encrypted signal transmission although it is not as robust as that of the PowerG offerings.
The PowerG Motion PG9914 is going to have a bit more detection range and has a higher pet immune rating over that of the Qolsys IQ MotionQS1231-840. However, your dog falls below both.
Battery life on PowerG sensors should be longer than that of their S-Line counterparts as well, so that could be taken into account.
