myQ wifi opener and myQ gateway on alarm.com

Hello all, I’ve got my 2gig system freed from vivint and running on suretydiy recently. I’m happy with it so far, so I decided to add a few more things.

First up is a second garage door opener with myQ. I had 1 compatible opener so I bought the 828LM and 888LM to connect it to my alarm.com account. It works great. My second opener was not compatible so I installed a chamberlain with WiFi and myQ. This model does not require the gateway (828LM), however the directions say that it can be used to increase WiFi range. I would like to use it so that both openers are routing through the gateway to alarm.com. I believe that is the way to get all of these to operate together.

So far my attempts have failed. When I go to alarm.com and select add a garage door opener with WiFi, it say to put the opener in learn mode and click continue. Between the opener’s installation manual, alarm.com directions and tutorial videos, I’ve seen three different ways to put the opener in learn mode. None of them have worked.

Has anyone tried a similar setup? Any tips on how to get these all working together?

Thanks

Do you mean you replaced the opener? Or did you install the 821LM Chamberlain equivalent?

The overhead opener models with built in wifi are their own Gateway (as would be the 821LM), and to function, would need to connect to your home wifi and have their gateway serial number added to your account.

For assistance adding a second gateway, send an email to customerservice@suretyDIY.com with your service address and the gateway serial number.

“I installed a chamberlain with WiFi and myQ. This model does not require the gateway (828LM), however the directions say that it can be used to increase WiFi range. I would like to use it so that both openers are routing through the gateway to alarm.com.”

The directions suggest to use a gateway to increase signal strength over instead of connecting directly from the opener. I understand the wifi openers can connect directly to my wifi router, however, I already have a gateway and I would like to take advantage of that as the directions indicate. If that turns out not to be possible with alarm.com, I will add the second opener by connecting directly to my router.

Any help is appreciated.

Interesting, yeah it seems the openers are able to simply be learned in on RF (the gateway does not actually extend wifi range, it is not a wifi device)

Ignore the parts about the MyQ Account.

It looks like you would just go through the “Add Device” wizard on Alarm.com and when prompted to press the learn button on the garage device, press the learn button shown in the video on your overhead.

It appears it would just learn in the same way an 888LM (or equivalent) would.

That video along with the installation manuals for the opener and gateway are what led to my original questions. The add device wizard on alarm.com is not working for me.

I have a 888LM on another opener that is working fine with the gateway. Between all the instructions I have read and watched there were three ways suggested to put the opener in learn mode. Push the button once, push and hold for 2 seconds or push three times and listen for a beep. Non of them are working so far.

Thanks for the help

It would help to know the exact steps you are performing.

So, just to clarify, you are selecting “Add a new device” in Alarm.com, selecting the “MyQ Enabled Garage Door” option, then verifying your gateway LED indicates it is looking for new devices, then pressing the button on the overhead controller?

There likely shouldn’t be an issue, but we will verify whether any problem might come from trying to link a Liftmaster Gateway and a Chamberlain Wifi Overhead.

As a follow up, there should be no issue per the manufacturers between the HD950WF and the 828LM.

These issues have apparently been correlated with the wifi network connection of the overhead. Have you by chance added the HD950WF to your wifi network?

If not it is possible it was added to one by the manufacturer for testing. Can you reset that to defaults to clear the wifi settings and try adding normally as a device again? The HD950WF should not be connected to or trying to connect to any wifi when learned in the way you intend.

On alarm.com I select “add a new device” and “MyQ enabled garage door opener”. It then says to press the learn button on the opener for 2 seconds (this is different than how the manual says to put it in learn mode, which is push 3 times and listen for a beep) then click continue. Then it times out and says “We couldn’t find any new devices on your gateway. Press the retry button below to restart the learn-in process.”

I have not added the opener to my wifi. I understand the opener can be connected that way, but have avoided doing so since I already have a gateway. I do not know how to reset wifi settings on the opener. Any ideas on how to do that?

There seems to be only one step to default the network connection, from the manual:

“Press and hold the black adjustment button on the garage door opener until three beeps are heard (approximately 6 seconds.)”

A reset to default wifi settings seems to have been the answer. I have the new opener connected to alarm.com through the gateway now.

Thanks for the help.
