Motion Alarm Event

In my business we enter building through the break room. Several times the break room motion sensor has been tripped as we open the external break room door. The break room door sensor has been set up with a delay so we can enter the building without tripping the the alarm as long as it’s deactivated within a specified period of time. This has worked correctly probably 98% of the time. The other 2% of the time we’ve had false alarms triggered by the motion detector in that room as we entered it. That happened maybe 5 or so times over the course of a year. At the time the motion detector was aimed towards the door. The windows left and right of the door have security grates over them. I figured maybe if one approached the door and unlocks it when behind the gate, the motion detector was unable to detect motion before the door was opened, but if someone walked straight up to the door (and their movement was not shielded by the grate), then they tripped the motion sensor as they approached the door. To alleviate that I moved the motion sensor a couple months ago so now someone has to enter the room to set it off. This morning we had a nother false alarm. It’s not possible to have it tripped by someone outside the building. The only thing I can think of is there might be an inconsistent delay in the door opening deactivating the motion detector. So, most of the time the signal to deactivate the motion by the door opening happens in time for that sensor to not be tripped, but sometimes it isn’t received in time. Does that make sense? Can you look at our setup to see if I need to change any settings? It’s really strange. As I said 98% percent of the time it works correctly. I don’t know what else to do.

I do no see a sensor labeled break room on the alarm.com account tied to this surety account.

First thing I would do is perform a range/signal test. To do this, swipe down from the main page > Settings > Advanced Settings > Code > system test > and select either PowerG signal strength for power or Sensor test for legacy sensors

If the sensor signal is poor, I recommend either installing a PowerG or installing a signal repeater like the Resolutions Products RE524X for legacy sensors(319.5Mhz, 345Mhz, 433Mhz).

I have 2 accounts… one for my home and one for my business. I’m probably logged into the forum with my personal account. Sorry about that.

The break room door sensor is Power G and the test showed the signal as strong. The Break Room motion is a regular sensor that came back as Average DBM Good (-78), Latest Results Good (-79) and Packets Perfect (8).

A PIR won’t capture motion through glass. If the door being opened is within the field of detection for that motion detector, even at the edge, it is sometimes possible to get a motion detection event from the door opening before the door open event. Pressure or temperature differentials can result in the door opening to trigger the motion detector either from the door itself or loose/hanging objects within its field of view.

The best solution would be to cover the same space but avoid the door being in the field of view of the motion detector at all if it still is. If this is the IQ Motion Detector it has an 80 degree field of view.

Can you send a photo via private message which shows the motion detector location relative to the door?

Please also send a photo of the door sensor where it is installed on that break room door.

Are there any hanging objects within view of the motion detector which might move from air-flow?
