Kwikset 888 Z Wave Plus Door Locks

Hi all,

I have 3x Kwikset 888 Z Wave Plus Door Locks (Satin Nickel 888 SmartCode Electronic Deadbolt with Z-Wave Technology | Kwikset). I followed Surety’s YouTube instructions (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7GeFe6QdKII) and the product manual (see excerpt below) to add them to my Iq Panel 4 running 4.5.2. Essentially:

  1. Clear the device from the Z wave network.
  2. Add the device to the Z wave network.
  3. Rediscover Z wave network.

Unfortunately, the panel complains that they are connected insecurely (see attachment), and I am unable to control them. I factory reset one of them and followed the above steps again to see if that might fix things, but it did not. Thoughts?

Thanks!

Distance is a big factor in Z-wave lock pairing, especially the older models like the Kwikset 888. That model does not support S2 security to my knowledge, are you getting prompted regarding S2 when pairing?

How far away is the panel from the locks when pairing? Within ten feet or so is usually necessary. You can bring the lock to the panel or bring the panel to the lock.

The panel can be run on battery and add the devices if you disable the Power Management setting in Settings > Advanced Settings > installer code > Installation > Installer Settings.

Hi Jason,

The lock is immediately adjacent to the panel (3’ away).

You are correct that the attached message about encryption shows up while adding the device. My understanding is the same as yours in that the locks do not support S2 encryption.

If you send an unlock command from the app what response do you see? Any specific error message? Does it unlock the bolt?

If not, can you control them by swiping to the lock page on the panel?

On the app, it tries to unlock the bolt, but nothing happens.

On the panel, the locks appear on the Z wave device list and on the health check page (with an orange warning), but I don’t see anywhere for me to try to actuate the lock.

Does the lock try to turn when you send a command?

Are you able to lock unlock from the doorlock itself, via code?

Should be a page with a lock Icon that you can select by swiping to from the home screen.

Its possible the page is disabled. Navigate to Settings > Advanced Settings > Enter Installer Code > Installation > Installer Settings > Door Lock Page. From there you can enable. Any change?

I would also suggest running a Z-Wave Network Rediscovery. Settings > Advanced Settings > Enter Installer Code > System Tests > Z-Wave Tests > Rediscover Network

No. See attachment for what the app shows.

Yes.

It’s checked, but grayed out. See below.

I did. See step 3 in my OP

To troubleshoot, try the following:

  1. Delete the lock from panel programming.
  2. Ensure the batteries are fresh and of the type recommended by the manufacturer.
  3. Factory Reset the lock.
  4. Bring the lock within six feet of the panel
  5. Pair the lock to the panel. Leave it there for 5 minutes after the pairing process. Send no Z-Wave commands to/from the panel during this time.
  6. After pairing, run the Z-Wave Rediscovery.
  7. Reboot the panel

Once rebooted, test for resolution, any change?

Unfortunately not :frowning:

I’m not showing any connected atm. Were they all removed?

out of curiosity, does the Z-Wave daughter card pass a daughter card test? (Settings > Advanced Settings > System Tests > Daughter Card Tests)

However, its possible they are not compatible. Those locks are end of life and are not listed as tested compatible by Qolsys so it is possible they do not work.

Yes, I removed them again because otherwise the panel keeps reporting a warning.

Daughter card test passed. See below.

Daughter card test is just for the panel, ensuring that the z-wave radio is working.
