The furnace is not turning on. The surety system controls it, but there’s a z-wave trouble light on. I changed the batteries, but it’s still not working.
I guess there is a bit more needed in this case to troubleshoot.

Ultimately, a thermostat is a fairly simple device. It will continue operating normally locally even without remote commands of course. Is the thermostat powered on? Or is the thermostat itself unresponsive locally?
Ignoring the app, etc., right now, what is the current mode and target temp at the thermostat? If your mode is on heat or auto and the target temp threshold is exceeded you either have a malfunctioning thermostat or a serious Furnace issue. This would not have anything to do with remote control and you may need to contact HVAC repair.
