Hi. Recently my IQ smoke alarm seems to be going offline for like an hour at a time here and there. On the panel the initial failure said “malfunction” or something like that. I believe I’ve changed the batteries out at this point. It happened again today and I’m not at home to check the panel. Is there anything you can see from your side?
If I were to buy a new one, I noticed there is a new model. Can it use the same base plate as my existing one, or would I need to mount a new plate and everything in my ceiling?
Based on your Panel’s recent activity, we do see that your Smoke Detector went offline (13 hours ago) > online (12 hours ago) > offline (3 hours ago) > online (2 hours ago).
It appears that it is now intermittently going offline/online at random times. As of this writing, we don’t see any trouble conditions on your panel since the Smoke Detector is currently back online.
We can also see that the reported signal strength of your Smoke Detector is Strong so it’s no longer about the connection.
If you plan to purchase a new smoke detector, we can check whether its base plate is compatible with your existing one. Unfortunately, we’re unable to see the exact model of your current smoke detector on our end. If you get a chance to check, could you please let us know the model number?
Hi Brian, thanks for taking a look! My current smoke alarm is model QS5110-840. Although it seems to be working now, I’m considering preemptively replacing it. Is it common to have occasional connection problems like this? Not sure what could have changed, since both the alarm panel and the detector are practically stationary.
There are a few additional causes of offline malfunctions on the QS5110.
The QS5110-840 sensor will report offline malfunctions when a handful of fault conditions are present, which can only be identified via the LED flash pattern.
Yellow flash every 12 seconds (with 1 chirp every 48 seconds): This means Low battery.
Yellow flash every 8 seconds (with 1 chirp every 48 seconds): Dirty/contaminated sensor chamber.
Yellow flash every 4 seconds (with 1 chirp every 48 seconds): General detector trouble or fault. If this happens I would recommend replacement.
Did you hear any beeps from the sensor when the sensor was reporting offline?
What is the expiration date printed on that smoke detector?
Swapping models will require swapping out the mounting plates.
