IQ Panel 2+ w/ Existing Smoke Detectors

Hey Guys,

I currently have an IQ Panel 2+ and am looking into integrating smoke detectors. The home is a new build with existing wired (3 wire?) smoke detectors from Kidde. I see they have a relay module (SM120X) which I’m hoping to use with the Qolsys Hardwire 16-F. I can’t think of a reason it shouldn’t work (could be wrong) … but if it would … would the relay out from the Kidde connect to just a normal zone / contact sensor on the 16-F, or the fire connection?

Thanks!

Actually, looking a bit closer, if the fire isn’t needed… the 8 zone (QS7130-840) would likely do the same job?

The Smoke detector circuit on the Hardwire 16F is only for use with 2-wire smoke detectors, from the data sheet: Smoke Zone: 1 two-wire smoke loop, 10 detectors max. Support for System Sensor® 2W-B, 2WT-B, 2WTA-B. Detector models should not be mixed.

It is otherwise not for use with other smoke detector types/relays.

You wouldn’t be able to set a normal contact zone as a Life Safety type zone, such as Fire. The sensor zones on the Hardwire 16 (or 8) are not designed for use with Life Safety devices. They are for security zones, like doors, windows, motions etc.

There aren’t really 3-wire low voltage detectors. Do you have house line voltage detectors?

AC interconnected detectors would be able to be monitored via the Interlogix Firefighter, which can be hard to find since Interlogix decided to shut down its security business, but I think it can still be found. Look for the SLX-AD-T3 Audio Detector. This is a sensor that detects the activation of AC line voltage smokes.

just to add, I also had the same problem. Based on Jason’s advice, I ended up getting the SLX-AD-T3 for my system IQ2 (319,5 MHz). You can still find them on ebay for around $50 as the product has been discontinued. I also have interconnected AC Kidde smoke/CO combination detectors with annunciation. You only need 1 of these listening devices if its interconnected. I thought the SLX-AD-T3 wasn’t going to work with my Kidde’s because of the annunciation, but it does work. The Kidde makes the annunciation after 2 complete T3 sounds, and that what the SLX-AD-T3 needs to activate.

You should also know that the SLX-AD-T3 only listens to the smoke part, not the CO part (which is 4 rapid beeps, instead of 3 slower ones like the smoke). They do make smoke/CO listeners, I think the FF345 (circular one) does both.

Thanks, sort of what I figured.

I think I’m going to try using the Kidde relay adapter and wire it to the relay on a Interlogix 60-362N-10-319.5

If that doesn’t work (only thing I see is perhaps the Qolsys won’t allow me to select smoke detector, but looking at the menu it appears it will) I’ll go with the Firefighter/listener.

Thanks guys!

You should also know that the SLX-AD-T3 only listens to the smoke part, not the CO part (which is 4 rapid beeps, instead of 3 slower ones like the smoke). They do make smoke/CO listeners, I think the FF345 (circular one) does both.

That’s right, the 319.5 version compatible with the standard IQ Panel 2+ is only for smoke detectors and won’t do CO.

The 345 version does offer both for combo units (current versions of it, originally it only did smoke too).

But the SLX-AD-T3 would be the way to go with interconnected AC smokes.
