There are three ways to interact with thermostats through Google Home:
- By name,
- By location,
- Or if there is one thermostat, by general device type.
Important: The command to Google Home must start with, “Ok Google, ask Alarm.com…” or “Hey Google, ask Alarm.com…”.

To interact by name, use the exact name in the command.
- Example: If there is a thermostat named Living Room, users could say, “Set the living room thermostat to 75 degrees.”

To interact by location, the location must be in the device name.
- Example: If the thermostat is named L iving Room Thermostat, users could say, “Turn my AC on in the living room.”

To interact by general device type, use the words “thermostat”, “therm”, “temperature”, or “temp” in the command.
- Example: “Set the temp to 71 degrees.” This only works if the system has one thermostat connected to it.
Example commands:
The following list of example commands is a small subset of the possible things to say to thermostats through Google Home. There is no exhaustive list available.
Note: The example commands are on a thermostat with the name Living Room Thermostat.
To change the temperature:
To set to a specific temperature:
- “Set the living room thermostat to 75 degrees.”
- “Heat living room thermostat to 75 degrees.”
- “Set my thermostat to 25 degrees Celsius.”
- “Set temperature to 75.”
- “Set heat to 78 degrees.”
To increase the temperature by value:
- “Warm the living room thermostat by 3 degrees.”
- “Turn the living room thermostat up by 3 degrees.”
- “Turn up the heat by 3degrees.”
To decrease the temperature by value:
- “Chill the living room thermostat by 3 degrees.”
- “Turn the living room thermostat down by 3 degrees.”
To increase the temperature by comfort level:
Note: This adjusts the temperature by 2 degrees Fahrenheit or 1 degree Celsius.
- “Heat the living room up.”
- “Turn up the living room thermostat.”
- “Turn up the heat.”
- “Make it warmer in here.”
To decrease the temperature by comfort level:
Note: This adjusts the temperature by 2 degrees Fahrenheit or 1 degree Celsius.
- “Cool the living room down.”
- “Turn down the living room thermostat.”
- “Turn down the heat.”
- “Lower the temperature.”
- “Make it colder in here.”
To change the mode:
- “Set the living room thermostat to heat.”
- “Turn living room thermostat heat on.”
- “Turn my AC on.”
- “Turn off the thermostat.”
To ask a question:
To ask about temperature:
- “What is the living room thermostat temperature?”
- “What’s the temperature on the living room thermostat?”
- “What’s the heat set to in the living room?”
- “What’s the temperature?”
- “What is the AC set to?”
To ask about mode:
- “What’s the mode of the living room thermostat?”
- “Is the living room thermostat on?”
- “What mode is my thermostat in?”
- “What’s the thermostat mode?”
How does mode impact my commands?
AC or Heat
The temperature value is set or increase/decreased to the commanded value.
Auto
Adjusting the temp while in auto mode sets either the high or low set point. Alarm.com does not accept adjustments of both mode from another mode and temperature for auto mode.
- Example: “Set thermostat auto mode to 85 degrees” would not work. To do so, change to auto mode and then set the temperature (e.g., “Change the thermostat to auto mode,” followed by “Set the low set point to 68.”).
Off
No adjustment commands work, and Google Home prompts the user by asking what thermostat mode the user would like it to change to.
