How to Limit Spider Activity on your Cameras

Spiders and other bugs can be a repetitive cause of false video recordings on security cameras. There are a handful of things you can do to discourage their presence and activity.

  • Regularly clean the area around the camera for webs or debris every few weeks. Wipe any webs and dust off the camera. This is the best way to reduce the impact and discourage activity.

  • On problem cameras, try turning off the LED status light. The LED can potentially attract a variety of bugs, which in turn draws in spiders to the area around the camera. (On the app this is under Video > Configuration Gear > Choose the camera under Video Settings > General)

  • If you have a house lighting fixture very close to the camera location, that may also be attracting bugs to the area. Try leaving that light off for a few weeks to see if activity slows.

  • Use spider repellents. Commercial spider repellent is very effective when sprayed around the camera area, some people report success using alternatives such as peppermint oil.

  • Applying a silicone lubricant on the housing can discourage web formation.
