Height Placement of Motion Detectors

I am replacing several motion detectors with ones I bought from you (Poer G microwave and IR)

I would like to not patch holes if I don’t have to.

I understand that the higher up you place these the farther the range.

Is there a downside from having too much range if I mount in same place? (this is also why I am requesting brackets in my other post)

For example, lets say I have 20 feet I want to cover, but the height makes the sensor cover 42 feet. Will I get false alarms?

IN addition, is there a way to turn off the Pet Immunity feature?

Motion sensors usually work best when mounted between 6 and 8 feet off the floor. Ideal height is usually 7 feet. Although, different models might have different requirements — so check the manual of your specific sensor to know for sure.

Mounting too much higher than the upper bound can increase the range, at the expense of increasing the blind spot underneath. For that reason, I’d recommend sticking to the heights outlined in the manual — as the sensor has been calibrated to best work in those conditions.

Understood, but the Power G allows mounting at different heights and has a chart with respective ranges. I am trying to avoid patching holes so my original question still stands

PowerG equipment is pretty good about not giving false positives. Especially the dual tech equipment like you reference. Is your concern about false alarms because it is facing a window or something?

In the instructions, there should be documentation on how to do the placement test — where you walk around the room and look at the lights on the detector to see how well it is picking up your motion.

As long as the placement test shows that it picks up your motion all around the room, you should be good to go.

My concern is my existing 2gig motion detectors are drilled i t the wall at about 7 feet. If. I use a different Heght I will have to patch holes. If the range is set for a lot of range and I have a room that is smaller, I don’t want false alarms.

At 7 feet, the power g sensor appears to have a range of 40 feet.?

The range diagrams are super confusing to me in the manual

You’ll be fine. The range is an “up to.” So it will work for rooms that are “up to” 40 feet long – of which your room falls in that category.

Mount it at the 7 foot mark where you have holes already and it’ll work just fine. I have PowerG motion detectors in small rooms in my system – the smallest being 10x10 – and they are also mounted at 7 feet. I’ve never had a false alarm.

If the range is hitting an area you don’t want covered, this could cause false alarms. If mounted too high, the pattern will be pushed farther out, increasing the area that is not covered under the sensor.

Local testing is always recommended before permanently mounting and relying on sensors. You may be able to use double sided foam tape (ex 3M brand) to temporarily mount without drilling.

This isnt a feature that can be enabled/disabled. The detector is immune to activity below 1 m (3ft) from 38 kg (85 lb) animals. Above the 1 m (3 ft) height limit, the detector is immune to 19 kg (42 lb) animals. Pet immunity decreases as the animal gets closer to the detector.
