I recently received a replacement doorbell from alarm.com because the first one was no longer connecting to the wifi, and this one the motion sensor does not work properly. The door bell only records video when the door bell is pressed or if I put my hand really close to the motion sensor. Is there any testing and or adjustment that can be made before I request a replacement again?
Motion Sensitivity can be adjusted on the Alarm.com website but visiting the Video Tab, then - Video Device Settings - Video Device Info.
Alarm.com typically does not directly handle warranty, was this a Skybell HD purchased directly from Skybell? Did you get the replacement from Skybell?
The firmware version being reported by your Skybell HD is different than the latest version reported by other units. I’m curious if that might be playing a part. We’re looking into that with Alarm.com currently.
Alright, looks like this is just a new revision of the SkybellHD. The firmware I’m told is appropriate.
Try adjusting the motion sensitivity to a different level. Is there any change in function?
Did you have motion detection issues with the prior SkybellHD?
No problem at all with the old camera it terms of motion issues… I just changed the sensitivity on my doorbell camera to medium and still no change. However I also walked around my property and and it seems like all of the camera are having issues in picking up any motion and they are all set at for Sensitivity 10(most sensitive) and target size 3% (small objects).
they are all set at for Sensitivity 10(most sensitive) and target size 3% (small objects).
With this setup you will likely have a ton of false recordings. Outdoor VMD should try to utilize smaller windows and larger target sizes typically to filter unwanted recordings. Or are you setting it to extreme sensitivity to test? Keep in mind you’ll need to walk through your motion detection windows to trigger, and they should be long and narrow generally, for the best results.
I see about 30 camera triggered recordings from those cameras since this post was made, are you still seeing VMD trouble?
As for the SkybellHD, it is not VMD (a change in pixel hue) which triggers recordings, but a built-in PIR motion detector.
How high up is the SkybellHD mounted? Out of curiosity, if the space allows, can you try remaining out of frame for a couple minutes then crossing the SkybellHD at a normal visitor distance? Rather than approach straight on. I would like to see if the detector is more sensitive that way.
“Or are you setting it to extreme sensitivity to test?”
Yes
“How high up is the SkybellHD mounted?”
The door bell is mounted at 45 inches from the ground
“Can you try remaining out of frame for a couple minutes then crossing the SkybellHD at a normal visitor distance? Rather than approach straight on.”
It still did not work. No motion detected… only when doorbell button is pressed.
I’m going to try to uninstall and reinstall the device to see if it changes anything
“Or are you setting it to extreme sensitivity to test?” Yes
Gotcha. Are you still seeing trouble with these? I’m seeing a lot of recordings from those two cams. We can’t actually see video so not sure if it is capturing what you want, but we can see a list of camera triggered recordings.
I’m going to try to uninstall and reinstall the device to see if it changes anything
That’s a good step. Make sure to reset the SkybellHD. If you are not seeing motion being picked up at all and you have motion detection recordings turned on in the app settings, you likely have a software issue or a defect.
So should I request another replacement? Will the software issue be within the doorbell unit?
If the prior doorbell was the same model and firmware, had no issue with motion detection in the same location, and re-installation does not resolve the issue, I would advise replacement.
I would anticipate a software issue being caused by issues during setup.
