Yes, up to a certain level this is normal. The VDB770 uses its back plate as a heat sink. According to Alarm.com the outer surfaces of the device and especially the back plate are expected to reach higher temperatures than some other Alarm.com video devices.
If it is much hotter then you may have a power issue.
