I’m looking at adding some form of video recording to my account. Are alarm.com Video Cameras better than Image Sensors? Looking at pros/cons of each. Any advice you can give would be great thanks!
There is certainly a difference and depending on your personal needs one may be better than the other for you. Or you may find that you require both. Let me give you a brief rundown of the two:
Image Sensors
The Image Sensor is a PIR motion detector with camera. The sensor takes motion activated images to provide additional information for alarm events, disarms, and other events of interest.
like a standard PIR motion sensor, the Image Sensor is enrolled into sensor group/type
and it will trip an alarm at the appropriate time for that group.
By default, the Image Sensor captures images on motion when the panel is Armed Away, during an alarm, the first motion event after the panel is disarmed from Armed Away or With the Peek-In feature, the Image Sensor can capture images on-demand.
Keep in mind that Image sensor use is exclusive to the Gold Interactive package and includes 40 events per month. *Note: Regardless of upload limit, images will always be taken in the event of an alarm.
Video Cameras
Allow you to View live video through web browsers and mobile devices. Give a flexible choice of triggers to initiate recordings and optional notifications based on motion (ip cameras) Event Triggers (alarm activation arm/disarm, entry delay, contact sensors) Recordings can be attached to email for immediate review on computers and compatible mobile devices
Clips can also be played back through web and mobile site (not the app at the time of this writing)
Camera use is limited to Alarm.com compatible cameras some of which include:
Indoor: ADC V521IR, ADC V520IR
Outdoor: ADC V720
Although many analogue cameras can work when utilizing the Alarm.com video server.
You will need an account with Alarm.com Cloud Video Level 1 or a standalone Pro Video account in order to utilize Video Cameras. Level 1 includes the use of up to 4 cameras and provides 1,000 cloud clips per month. However, these limits can be upgraded.
Video Cameras with Alarm.com Cloud Video give you triggered recordings based on motion-detection or by system-triggered events, both of which you can customize. This also includes storage of clips to the cloud. A standard set-up is not used for 24/7 surveillance. Should you require 24/7 recording, this can be achieved by using the Stream Video Recorder (SVR). This would allow you to create recording schedules and store footage locally to the SVR.
Image sensors do not serve the same purpose as video cameras, however, if you do not want/need streaming and/or video recordings of interior areas, the Image Sensor will provide still images caught during the first motion triggered when alarms occur. (There are also background capture rules, so that any motion every so often is also captured). However, they arent recommended for outside use. Ultimately, they are a more cost effective option over ADC Video Cameras.
Hopefully, this helps to clarify some of the differences between the two.

Question, does the video camera such as the v721w have its own built in motion sensor?
How does one get alerted to the entry onto property, in order to know to view the video?

There is not a built in PIR motion detector in the 721W. Alarm.com video camera recordings can be triggered in one of a couple ways:
- Alarm.com rules that state when one of your system’s PIR motion detectors activate, record a clip.
- VMD (video motion detection) in which user-selected motion capture windows within the field of view are scanned for movement. This is not the same as a PIR, and it uses changing hue over a selected window for a chosen percentage of the image to determine movement.
Alarm.com notifications can be created to notify you and even attach the recorded clip to the notification, when the recording occurs.
It is my understanding you can have a notification (with a video clip) sent via text to you when the system is disarmed by a particular user/code (for example your kid but not your spouse). Is that correct?

Yes, you would do so by setting a new Video Recording Schedule, selecting Arming or Disarming as the type, then choose the user (or all users), time frame, recipients, etc.
