Camera stopped saving events

The camera that I have looking over my driveway hasn’t saved any events since 4/2 apparently. I get notifications from it regularly when it spots a person, animal, vehicle etc., but somehow none of those event triggered clips are being saved online any longer. I removed and re-added the recording rules to no avail.

What gives?

Looking at the account and setup, everything looks to be configured and enabled, and the history shows the rule being triggered and notifications going out, but no clips from that camera since the afternoon of 4/2.

Have you performed a power cycle on that camera? If not, could you unplug the camera, wait a few minutes, then plug it back in?

I just did as you requested, let’s see if anything changes.

That doesn’t appear to have done anything. I got a notification a bit ago of a triggered event on that camera but there’s no saved video when I went to check 15 minutes later.

Are you able to view Live View for that camera through the app/website? If so, can you manually request a video recording from the camera?

  • Log in to the Alarm.com app.
  • Tap Video.
  • On the desired video device, tap the Play Icon.
  • Tap Record video Icon.
  • Tap Ok.
  • To view recorded video clips, tap Saved.

I tried that in the app, got a little notification that the clip had been recorded successfully and the clip would be available in 2-3 minutes.

It’s been longer than 3 minutes. The clip is not present.

I would suggest power cycling the router the camera is connected to, waiting about 10 minutes then trying again to grab a recording again.

If that fails, then you’ll want to remove the camera from the account and factory reset it. To do so:

  • Delete the camera from Alarm.com
  • Factory Reset the camera
    • Press and hold the WPS button until the LED is flashing Green and Red (about 15 seconds), then release the button. The camera reboots with factory defaults.
  • Wait 5 minutes after the camera reboots, then re-add the camera.
  • Once re-added, create the VA rule,
  • Wait 5 minutes after saving the rule, then test for resolution.

I’m not running a consumer level router, so rebooting it isn’t going to accomplish anything regardless. Removing, resetting and adding the camera is something I’ll try to get to later today. The camera itself isn’t in an easily accessible spot.

What domains/host names does the camera use to save a clip vs send a notification?

Alarm.com video devices need to be able to communicate with servers and other Alarm.com devices in order to provide the user with a seamless experience.

Domains and subdomains to whitelist: WAN ↔ LAN (Required)

  • *.alarm.com
  • *.devicetask.com
  • *.g4c5j.com (only required for TCP/21)

K, thanks. I see numerous successful queries/connections to .alarm.com and .devicetask.com, which makes sense since the doorbell camera is working just fine. I don’t see anything reaching out to *.g4c5j.com but if that’s FTP, that’s not going to happen.

I need to dig into the logs on the mesh network to try to find any errors. It’s odd since the notifications go out just fine, just the clip uploading is failing on that one camera.

I still haven’t tried a reset of the hardware itself but if I can’t find anything in my network logs then I guess that’s the only option I have left.

Let us know what you find but factory reset and re-pair would typically be the next troubleshooting step in this case.

OK well after a lot of screwing around necessitated by re-setting the camera, it seems to be back online and recording triggered events.

Question: Will it now need to be retaught the “familiar vehicles?”

After the Factory Reset, you will need to re-enable that feature under Video > Settings > Familiar Vehicles and re-add vehicles. Only images from clips captured after Familiar Vehicle is enabled can be associated with familiar vehicles.

That’s kind of a huge gap from ADC for all this talk of AI enabled this and that. However, it turns out that re-adding them shows the full complement of images that they already recognize. Do you mean that it won’t recognize them even though there are already say 50 photos associated with one of them?

I was able to get some additionally clarity on this. According to Alarm.com, you should not have to re-enable the Familiar Vehicle feature, or re-add the vehicles if they were added previously. However, you will need to train the Familiar Vehicle Notifications for Video Analytics for that specific camera, and the rules themselves will need to be recreated for that camera.
