First, the installation is unnecessarily complicated if your doorbell wiring comes through a standard single-gang electrical box.
I understand this is a DIY system that requires some handiness and ingenuity, but this felt like an avoidable design issue. The VDB775 and its wall plate are relatively narrow, leaving large gaps on both sides when mounted over a standard electrical gang box. In addition, the mounting hole pattern does not align with standard gang-box screw spacing.
My solution was:
-
Reuse a wider wedge mounting plate from an old (non-Alarm.com) doorbell to completely cover the electrical box.
-
Install a 6-32 machine screw through the top mounting hole into the gang box.
-
Drill a new hole below the box and install a wall anchor for the bottom mounting screw.
That got me about 95% of the way there. There are still a few small gaps that I’ll likely seal with exterior silicone.
I also need a slight rightward viewing angle adjustment. I’ve found various VDB775 wedge and angle-mount kits online, but the descriptions are unclear. I can’t tell whether they provide horizontal (left/right) adjustment, vertical adjustment, or both.
Can anyone recommend a mount or wedge kit (by specific part number and source that has stock) that provides approximately 15–45 degrees of horizontal (left/right) adjustment while remaining level vertically?
Thanks.
