ADC-T3000 smart thermostat not working in "AUTO" mode

Just installed Alarm.com’s ADC-T3000 smart thermostat. I was migrating over from a nest thermostat, where I had it setup in “Auto” mode (where I would establish a temperature range, like 65 to 75, and the system would go into Heat or Cool mode throughout the year as necessary to stay in this range). Although I have setup the new ADC-T3000 to also be in “Auto” mode, it seems to stay in cool mode. That is to say, when it is cooling, but then increase the set point to something really high like 85 degrees, I would expect it to kick over from Cool to Heat, but it doesn’t. The screen stays blue in Cool mode, even though the set point shows to have been increased to 85. When I change the mode to Heat, it starts heating up the room to try to achieve the 85 set point.

So, the system works just fine if I am willing to switch back and fort between Heat and Cool, but I’m looking to see if there is any way I can just set it on Auto like I used to have with the Nest thermostat.

My system is a heat pump style HVAC. Below is an image of how the ADC-T3000 is wired up, as well as how the old nest was setup. Note that the C wire has been stripped a bit too far, but it is definitely in there securely.

Thanks

(edited pics 5/14 to add image of old nest thermostat wiring as well)

My T2000s work in auto mode so it’s likely a set up issue of some sort. Hopefully something simple.

update 05/14, what I’ve learned / tried so far:

  • multimeter shows 28V to red wire
  • tried moving red wire from Rh to Rc, no luck (note that both AC and heat are working, so I suspect this would not matter since ADC-T3000 is already digitally jumping Rh to Rc)
  • tried setting up wiring configuration to say that I have Rh and Rc, not just Rh (my initial setup), but this ended up showing the incorrect wiring setup after, so aborted that.
  • tried moving orange wire from O to B, did not work. My understanding is that since I am using a Carrier heat pump (model 25HCA), that this would not be correct, but I tried it anyway…

hopefully someone knows why AUTO mode is not working yet separate HEAT and COOL modes are working fine…

thanks!

If Auto is not an option this typically indicates a setup issue, or incomplete pairing. It can function otherwise, but Auto mode missing as an option in ADC is a known complication.

To try and resolve, first remove the device from your panel, then factory reset it, then add it back.

To factory reset:

Press the menu button.
Select SETTINGS.
Select INSTALLER.
Select RESET.

Thanks for the response Jason.

To clarify, AUTO is showing up as an option. It just doesn’t work if I select it. As an example if the system is cooling and I set it to auto and increase the set point really high to trigger heating mode, nothing happens. No sound from fans, compressor, anything.

Does this change your thinking on whether a reset will help?

That is to say, when it is cooling, but then increase the set point to something really high like 85 degrees, I would expect it to kick over from Cool to Heat, but it doesn’t.

Ok, thank you for the clarification, going back over this I think I see what might be going wrong.

How are you setting the thermostat target, at the thermostat or in the app/website?

The Heat target cannot be higher than the cooling target. When tapping the up arrow you are changing the target for the currently active mode, not a single value that Auto will hover around.

There is I believe a 3 degree limit between the cool and heat targets. This is because you would not want a system intermittently turning on heating and AC repeatedly to meet a single temp target, the thermostat cannot be set that way.

Visit the app or website and set the target range to test. Let me know if you still notice an issue.

your explanation was great. I did what you suggested and everything looks great now. thanks again!
