When you say a power application issue, what do you mean?
I mean small debris blocking the battery terminal as described earlier or the battery connection being otherwise poor previously. There is little other possibility if you changed nothing else and only removed and re-added the batteries. For some reason the sensor was likely being underpowered.
Other issues can cause loss of supervision, but they would not cause the sensor to fail opening or tampers initially without still causing it now.
